Layla Ally Salum

Dr. Layla Ali Salum is a Lecturer in Geography and Environmental Studies with more than seventeen (17) years of professional experience at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). She holds a PhD in Climate Change and Sustainable Development from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), an M.A. in Geography and Environmental Studies from UDSM, and a B.A. in Education from the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). Her research focuses on climate change and sustainable development. She has demonstrated strong expertise in teaching, research, consultancy, curriculum development, academic leadership, and professional training. She has served in academic and administrative leadership roles, including as Head of the Department of Coordination and Management of Continuing Education, where she contributed to the coordination of continuing education programmes, institutional development, and professional capacity-building initiatives. Dr. Salum has also contributed to national and institutional initiatives relating to policies, groundwater resources, population issues, resource conservation, climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental assessment, and sustainable development. Her work bridges the gap between academic research, policy development, environmental practice, and community and institutional capacity building. In addition to her academic work, she is a highly qualified environmental professional, certified and registered with the Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA), where she provides professional support in addressing and responding to environmental challenges.
